Extension and renovations at “Old Thatch”, The Green, Edlesborough

Working under a contract for the owners of this Grade II listed thatched cottage, we added a large extension to the rear elevation and built a new garage with studio office above.  The contemporary design of the scheme was created by the owners in association with their architect, Richard Onslow.  The project features floor to ceiling glazed windows, metal and stone spiral staircases and many other modern touches that compliment and enhance the character of this historic building.

Two new houses at Sharphill, Felden, Herts.

A speculative housing project of just two high-specification five bedroom homes in the village of Felden on the outskirts of Hemel Hempstead that we completed at the end of September 2005.  The sloping nature of the site necessitated that the houses be built by terracing into the slope with concrete filled hollow-block retaining walls to hold back the chalk sub-soil.  Features of note within the properties include granite kitchen worktops and under-floor heating to the ground floor.

Choakes Yard, Great Billington, Beds.

A relatively complex speculative housing scheme set in the conservation area of this pretty Bedfordshire village close to Leighton Buzzard.  The project comprised four conversion properties (formerly the stables for nearby Billington Manor), one house renovation and four new-build houses with home working facilities built in a style that reflects the existing stable structures. The project included realignment of the public highway at the site entrance, construction of a new estate road, renewal of the public sewer and underground diversion of overhead power lines.  One unusual feature of the conversion properties was the inclusion of an “Up and Under” electric heating system using under-floor cables and radiant foil panels in the ceilings which was designed and installed by Eswa Ltd.

The project was completed in February 2004 with the value of the construction works in the region of £1,200,000.

This scheme received a Commendation in the Urban Design Awards 2005 presented by South Bedfordshire District Council.  We were delighted to receive this award in association with the scheme’s architects Project Design Studio Ltd., with whom we have a long and successful working partnership.

The Methodist Chapel, Waterlow Road, Dunstable

A speculative project constructed to our own design which comprised of a sympathetic conversion of the original church buildings to provide six galleried three-storey apartments together with one new house within the church grounds.  Some of the unusual features of the project included the refurbishment of both of the stained glass windows at either end of the chapel, repair and replacement of the original timber windows to comply with modern standards, provision of large metal roof windows supplied by Clement Windows Group and the installation of Alreflex insulation to the roof and walls to allow the original internal timber boarded ceilings to be kept. The project was completed in February 2002 - the value of the works was £760,000.

Wallace Nurseries, Eaton Bray, Beds.

Our largest ever development comprising 166 properties of 40 different house types from 1-bedroom flats to 5-bedroom detached houses arranged in a distinctive “village within a village” layout.  Built over a period of some 10 years, completed in 1995 on the site of the largest pre-war carnation growing nursery in Europe.  Two of the larger homes on this development included reinforced concrete basements to increase the available floor area of the properties without impacting on the overall size of the building footprint.
